Boy oh boy did I battle the snails this year. Let’s get one thing cleared up before I go into the sordid details of this…I don’t like killing things. Ok? Seriously, it bothers me to even kill a spider, but snails…chewing…feasting on my plants. They must die. Last year, I noticed this problem and on the back side of the house, it is very shaded, cool, moist…perfect for snails. They would gather relentlessly every day and have a full feast. Well, I had to take action and fast. Mid-season around July, I started applying Bug Getta every two weeks, that seemed to really get most of them. This year, I took it a step further by looking on the large rocks in the landscape in the early am (around 8:00 AM) or right after it rains. I noticed that’s when they were most active and trolling for my precious greens. Between (what’s a nice word for killing…?) removing them…and using the bait, I had pretty happy plants this year. You have to keep a system going throughout the season as they lay eggs. What worked three weeks ago has probably washed away and will need to guard against the new baby snails. I had a lot less trouble with them this year compared to last year. Hopefully next year will be even less. Highly recommend that if you see holes in your leaves or flowers or if you just start to notice plants not faring well, check the base of the plant…if snails are the culprit…you’ll see them and you’ll see their damage quick.
