I hope you enjoy these photos of the beginning of fall transition around here. There is lots to do. Pruning, cleaning, leaves, bulb planting and then when it gets colder, I can get into the back and start clearing again. This is about the time of year my heart gets a little sad. 🙁

However, like I said, there is still lots to do. Here are some things I focus on over the colder months:

  • Laying compost as a top dressing to all trees and shrubs and especially around the base and root zones to protect from cold temperatures.
  • Clean rotted or finished annuals and other plants.
  • Add mulched leaves from trees to compost pile.
  • Prune trees and perennials in late fall.
  • Replenish mulch where there has been washout, etc.
  • Staking arbor vitae and other evergreens that need a little extra support through heavy snow.
  • Burlap around sensitive plants that get winter burn (smaller evergreens)
  • Working in the back woodland to slow burn, remove dead trees and get the neighbors’ wood piles full!
