My wildflower beds have been very rewarding.  I grew up with my grandfather always planting them on his 32 acre property and I loved them. This was my third and most successful season growing them. I have run the gamut with trying different things to keep weeds and grass out of the beds. This past year, I hit the nail on the head. I used the slow burn method to clear the ground first before I planted. In early spring, I used my garden torch to light the beds on fire and let them slowly burn as leaves and old debris caught on fire and then slowly moved its way around. I had a hose and a fire extinguisher in close reach. In doing this, it killed all of the old seed and plant/weeds that were previously there. This is by far the best method I have used. I have tried tilling, chemicals, hand prep, you name it, I’ve tried it. This method is the best. In all of my beds, I did not have ANY weeds or grasses to contend with. In this next season, I plan to really get wild and burn quite a bit of the back yard tree line and plant an acre of seed in the spring. Stay tuned for pics and updates!
