When the weather starts to cool off and I start getting a little down something that always makes me smile is a package arriving that says, “Handle With Care – Open Immediately – Live Plants Inside.” I like to make lists of different flowers and bulbs that I order the next season. This year, I really wanted some more Allium (I noticed I lose a few from year to year), more purple and black Tulips and a few varieties of new ferns to start in the woods. So, when Breck’s starts their discount sales in mid summer, I’m ordering immediately. You won’t receive them until it’s time to plant but that makes for great surprises in the early fall and you will love the results in the spring. For example, one of my orders was for 5 bags of 5 Persian Blue Allium for $10!! (by the way, those have nearly doubled in quantity just one year later) I gave a few of the bags away to friends to try in different areas of their properties and I’m going to plant the rest here. I prefer to use Breck’s as their bulbs have done outstandingly well, especially the double blooming Iris that bloom in spring AND AGAIN in fall.
I would highly recommend buying a tool that is a drill bit for bulbs. You attach to the end of your drill and easily drill the holes into the ground and place your bulbs. Water thoroughly and/or check the weather and try to plant when you’re going to have a few days of rain showers.
